IPOB Commander Ikonso, 6 others killed in joint military operation

 

In recent times, security installations in the SouthEast have come under serious attacks most of them result in the killing of policemen and security operatives. IPOB has always denied responsibility.

Early hours on Saturday (today), a joint Military Force, stormed the operational headquarters of IPOB in Awomama Village, Oru East LGA of Imo State killing one of the commanders and six others.

” The Nigeria Police, Nigerian Army, and the DSS in a joint operation, in the early hours of 24th April 2021 stormed the operational headquarters of IPOB in Awomama Village Oru, East LGA of Imo State … (and) eventually neutralized (IPOB’s SouthEast) commander popularly known as Ikonso Commander and six (6) others. In the encounter, three policemen and a soldier sustained bullet injuries and are said to be responding to medical treatment.

Police say that Ikonso is the Vice President-designate and coordinator of military operations of the group. Police also alleged that he masterminded the attack on the Imo Police Headquarters and several related attacks. He’s also said to have coordinated the attack on the headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service on 5th April 2021.

The Police added that joint operation with other security forces is meant to ” quell the activities of insurgents in Imo State and other States of the South East and South-South region of the country”.

“The security team have custody of the remains of Ikonso and six (6) others, six (6) AK47 rifles, hundreds of ammunition of different caliber and charms.
